There’s a reason why asphalt shingles remain the country’s number one roofing material. This roofing system provides excellent coverage and durability for its price, a trait no other roofing type can claim. Unfortunately, for all its advantages, there are also limits to what asphalt shingles can do. They are prone to common problems, such as leaks, cracks and rot.
Most of the time, these problems are not easily spotted, especially if you don’t know for what you’re looking. That’s why our roofing experts at Twin Rivers Roofing & Construction have decided to share signs that your asphalt shingle roofing may be due for a replacement soon.
Problems With the Shingles
Individual tabs can show a lot of common problems, such as curling, cracking and buckling. These problems are often rooted in moisture penetration and drying. One or two shingles should not be a big deal. These can be easily replaced by your roofing contractor. However, when 40% or more of your roof system is showing these problems, you need to call the professionals as soon as possible.
Mold, Mildew and Moss
High levels of moisture in your roofing system make for the perfect breeding ground for moss and mold. While these do not have a directly harmful effect on your roof, they can greatly diminish your curb appeal, making your home appear unkempt and dilapidated. In rare cases, the increased amount of moisture can also lead to leaks, a problem that could potentially be costlier to repair than to replace.
Old Age
Most asphalt shingle roofing systems can last a good 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Architectural shingles can reach up to 25 years. If your roof is close to the end of its lifespan, it may be time to consider getting a full replacement.
